Generac Power Systems was one of the first businesses to manufacture backup portable generators and automotive accessories when it was established in the USA in 1959. The company has been manufacturing generator sets for other manufacturers as well as for its own brand for more than 50 years. The company's headquarters are in the American state of Wisconsin, in the city of Waukesha.
Residential and commercial generators were being made by the company by the end of the 1980s, and in 1989 Generac unveiled the first gas-powered auto-start automatic standby system. Generac started producing generator sets for Caterpillar, Inc. in 1992. The two businesses talked about Generac possibly being acquired by Caterpillar as their cooperation grew, but the deal was never finalised. The alliance and product agreement were terminated by Caterpillar in June 1996, which resulted in protracted legal disputes between the two businesses.
Currently, the business is a pioneer in the manufacture of gas-fired standby generator sets. Many of the Generac engines used in production are based on FORD technology for naturally aspirated gasoline engines. A typical soundproof housing is used in the construction of more than half of all generator sets. Both air-cooled and liquid-cooled versions of these items are generally utilised as backup generators for country homes.
Liquid gas engines, many of which are produced using General Motors (GM) volumetric diesel engine technology, are utilised in the company's reserve gas power plants, which have a capacity of 30–100 kW. Also intended largely for standby use, these generator sets.
